Volunteer and run the 2009 race for free

On behalf of the Newtown Road Race, I would like to relay some great news that we received recently. With the economy under stress and everyone feeling the pinch, an anonymous Newtown resident has offered to pay the race registration fees for the first 100 people that volunteer for a Newtown Youth and Family Services event. In other words, 100 lucky people can earn a free race entry by pitching in to help others.

The first NYFS event where this is eligible will be Independent Living Day on Saturday, April 25 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jessi Zeigler is coordinating the event and can be contacted by phone at 203-270-4335. If Independent Living Day attracts less than 100 volunteers or if people volunteer but are not interested in running the race, we will extend the offer to a future event.

This unusual pledge gives us the chance to help people in a pinch, promotes volunteerism and adds a new aspect to what's grown to become a pretty big 5k event. The Newtown Road Race takes place on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend and details will be available soon. Check back often.
